Hovering a free app over the illustrations in the animated book brings the illustrations to life with animated videos. The videos feature celebrities such as Cheech Marin, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli as well as the Agape Youth Choir and 30 independent young artists.
The augmented reality provides an immersive experience for children and families. The technology also provides an alternative pathway for today’s kids to discover the joy of reading as well as dive deeper into aspects of the story that capture their interest.
The augmented reality takes the 2D book into multiple dimensions, making it 3D, multimedia and to an appropriate extent, interactive. As noted in the study “Benefits and Pitfalls of Multimedia and Interactive Features in Technology-Enhanced Storybooks: A Meta-Analysis,” multimedia features enhance story comprehension and expressive vocabulary, especially for disadvantaged children.
“A meta-analysis was conducted on the effects of technology-enhanced stories for young children’s literacy development when compared to listening to stories in more traditional settings like storybook reading. A small but significant additional benefit of technology was found for story comprehension… and expressive vocabulary… When investigating the different characteristics of technology-enhanced stories, multimedia features like animated pictures, music, and sound effects were found beneficial. In contrast, interactive elements like hotspots, games, and dictionaries were found to be distracting. Especially for children disadvantaged because of less stimulating family environments, multimedia features were helpful and interactive features were detrimental. Findings are discussed from the perspective of cognitive processing theories.”
Interactivity is used sparingly in the animated book, and specifically when it has demonstrable educational purpose.
The app will launch with 25 instances of illustrations that come to life and then for each of the next three months, activate 25 more illustrations. Readers will have the option to vote for which illustrations they would most like to see come to life. Their votes will help determine the next illustration to activate.
