Nature Deficit Disorder

Dear Parents, Teachers and Librarians!

I’m really concerned that kids aren’t spending enough time in nature.  I think if kids had more time in Nature, they would be more aware of the ways we are hurting Nature and be excited about healing humanity’s relationship with Nature.

Thankfully, more and more people are realizing that kids need more time outdoors in Nature. A really smart person named Richard Louv came up a term “Nature Deficit Disorder”  to describe the problems kids have if they don’t spend enough time in Nature.  I’m bringing this up to you because most kids don’t have a choice or good options to be in Nature.  In fact, Mr. Louv says the main reasons kids don’t spend enough time in Nature is their parents being afraid of the outdoors, not having access to Nature, and spending too much time in front of screens. He says a lack of unstructured time in nature can cause behavioral problems, attention disorders and depression.

My story, Pacha’s Pajamas, helps kids see Nature in a new light. We have music, a book, an eBook and soon an App, all of which are intended toencourage and inspire kids and their families to spend more time in nature.

To find out more about Nature Deficit Disorder, take a look at Louv’s book, Last Child in the Woods.

Catch you later, Alligator!
